If you intend to bait fish for whiting you need to plan your bait collecting prior to fishing and in general a session starts with bait collecting on the bottom of the tide and then you fish this bait on the run in tide as the water pushes up over the flats. To deal with fast flowing current you want to use two anchors, one at the strern and one at the bow to prevent the boat from moving around. By far and away my favourite technique bait fishing the flats is the cast and retrieve method with a small Alvey reel and light rod. Without a doubt the best baits for Whiting are live blood and sand worms, yabbies otherwise known as saltwater nippers and pipis. Again, the tip should be sensitive but strong enough to handle the rigors of more powerful casting. When fishing the beach, if the tide is receding, fish the front of the gutter. As the tide falls further, the best place to anchor is a little further back in the channel, so you are casting to where the sand bank drops into deeper water. All too often I see inexperienced anglers or families fishing the beach directly in front of the track to the beach. Fish the back of the gutter on an incoming tide. I’ve also found a bit of a pattern in that if the water is very clear, they will move to deeper water (3.5m+). For the kids and the ‘rough’ anglers look for an outfit that is a little more robust. I often read in fishing books and magazines that the last two hours of the rising tide and the first hour of the falling tide is the best time to fish for whiting off the beach. In my mind, beach fishing is one of the most underrated yet productive ways to catch a feed of legal size fish. I like fishing a big run in tide for whiting but whiting can be caught on both tides. What is great about these fish, is they are a little less finicky (so will take more of a variety of baits) than the summer whiting and tend to gather in larger schools. The best time to fish for whiting is usually with a rising tide although the fish will bite right through the day. It is also found at the top of Tasmania. They comb the wash looking for food, as it slides up and down the beach. These are natural feeding areas for fish as are points or other structure that may divert the tides or currents along the beach. Estuaries and sand flats are broadly defined as either saltwater rivers, creeks, bays, broadwater, sandy straits or the western or calm side of islands such as Fraser, Moreton and the Stradbroke islands in Queensland. Once anglers learn a few beach fishing secrets, they will soon realise the beach can turn on some great fishing for species like whiting and even during the middle of the day! Working out speeds is often based on experiment for each session. It covers all of your closed water applications from land based to the boat and Kayak. Adding pauses to the retrieve is often very effective and erratic retrieves, often a default when experimenting, can entice plenty of interest. Generally there is a permanent gutter carved out at such spots. It’s a lot better than casting with light line, only to hear your line snap under the pressure of the cast. For drifting in your boat or kayak, it might be wiser to fish a little heavier. An incoming tide, or rising tide, is considered to be one of the best fishing tide times. Saltwater nippers catch the biggest Whiting. In all three cases, I am looking for nice clean water with a bit of white wash. It takes about 6 hours for the tide to go from low to high and 6 hours from high to low. Basically you want to be chasing whiting on lures in the same sort of estuary flats as described above, except you should limit yourself to areas of less than 1m of water, even half a metre. When conditions allow, a 12/20lb-class boat rod is perfect for whiting fishing. Too much wind and swell and your gutters can turn into a washing machine and the fish will disappear, seeking calmer water. Coastline waves and currents send massive quantities of fish in your direction. Low tide shallow gutters (see diagram D) are some of the least fished on the beach, but can turn on some of the best whiting action of the lot. Tide is important. Fishing near estuary mouths after rain can produce fish like this. This is because sometimes fish baits can be a bit mushy and can fly off during the cast or be washed off by the tide. This is exhilarating fishing, but until you become very experienced at it, you shouldn’t expect the same results as bait if numbers are your end game. You should use the same set up and rigs for beach corners as the main beach, but be aware that the best time to fish them will depend on the swell and wind direction. Once during a beach session, I fished the same gutter, using, more or less, the same rig as a much older guy standing next to me. As whiting feed they bury their nose, almost up to their eyes, as they pull worms, crabs or yabbies from the bottom, leaving a divot as they pull back and continue their forage. Chasing whiting on topwater lures such as stickbaits and poppers as well as small soft plastics is very popular with lure anglers. I often use whiting or a ladyfish if caught, even small jacks off the beach for large snook. When fishing the beach, if the tide is receding, fish the front of the gutter. If nothing in your location is obvious for when the fish are feeding, try fishing different known feeding times, start two hours before high tide and fish til two hours after, repeat this at low tide. Whiting reside in the salt water inshore grounds and are prolific on our beaches. Use a long shank hook, size 4 to 8 and always go for the top brands. Features of a great low tide gutter include; a short or narrow gutter very close to shore, a blind end that closes up on the shoreline, a back sandbank that runs at 45° from the shore, enough depth so the water is not too turbulent and light swell of under 1m. For outfit 1, spool up with mono to 6 pound if you’re casting flesh and live baits. This combo will also be useful for fishing wider rivers, where the drop off is some distance from a gently sloping river bank. Bigger whiting are better targeted using fish baits alone because they are a predator and do feed on other fish. THERE'S whiting to be had on metro beaches at the right tide, with more hotspots around the state. Light wave action is perfect. Best Times to Fish. This means you need a different approach to the small sinker approach of the flats. As noted in the diagram, you also need a heavier ball sinker (4-5 ball) to hold your rig in place during the middle stages of the tide.
